As an orthodontist that has been involved in developing faces for improved cosmetics and breathing with Orthotropics® for the last 26 years, I have seen firsthand the functional and cosmetic impact of proper breathing with my patients. I have published in the prestigious scientific journal Cranio documenting the airway improvements which can be achieved in growing children with Orthotropics vs. conventional orthodontics. As part of this treatment it is essential that our patients become 100% nasal breathers. The health changes for my patients when they become 100% nasal breathers is amazing. Sleep patterns improve, energy levels improve, and schoolwork often improves. The mere act of sleeping with one’s mouth closed allows you to breathe air that is filtered, humidified, disinfected and in a way that does not create an unstable airway. This change not only impacts one’s quality of life, but also blends into any athletic activity.
I’ve been an avid runner for 46 years now and have run 25 marathons starting in 2001. Nineteen of those marathons were run with my mouth consistently staying open. After hearing Patrick McKeown lecture about exercising with one’s lips together I trained myself to run that way. The last 6 marathons I’ve run with my lips together and my performance has been better as a result. I have actually motivated some of my patients with this information and they have substantially improving their times in the mile.
There is ample research to substantiate what I have personally and professionally experienced if one wants to find it. Some of it can be found on this website. I have found therapy that is supported scientifically, but not part of the established mantra, can have a challenging path to become mainstream. This in no way diminishes the validity or efficaciousness of the program and in reality makes those that have an open mind to new research an advantage during competition for quite some time.
